A South Korean broadcaster has apologized for using « inappropriate » images and captions to show some countries participating in the Tokyo Olympics – including a photo of Chernobyl for Ukraine and pizza for Italy .
The Seoul-based MBC also released reports of the recent assassination of President Jovenel Moïse when Haitian athletes entered the Tokyo stadium during the opening ceremonies, The Guardian said in a report.
The network showed a picture from Dracula for Romania, pizza for Italy, and salmon for Norway.
It meanwhile referred to the US Marshall Islands as « once a nuclear test site for the United States ».
« Inappropriate images and captions were used to make some stories « said the network, officially the Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation, in a statement.
Athletes from other nations were greeted with friendlier – and sometimes bizarre – images and information presented.
For example, Britain’s entry into the arena included a picture of Queen Elizabeth II, while El Salvador, where cryptocurrency is legal tender, was depicted with a bitcoin symbol, the newspaper said.
