Splendor In The Grass is making its long-awaited return this year after 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic has failed. The real Shindig will (hopefully) take place in November, but this morning the organizers announced that there would also be a special virtual festival going on in July – when the event would normally take place.
There’s a lot going on at the virtual festival, with Live sets from Khalid, Chvrches, Pheobe Bridgers and Charli XCX. Confused about how it will all go? Then don’t worry, we’ve broken it down for you.
Splendor XR is the name for this additional virtual festival presented to you by the Splendor team. Essentially, it will come as close as possible to the Splendor formula – as ABC’s Al Newstead reports, the artists will perform in a digitally rendered version of Byron Bay’s parkland.
There will be a number of different virtual « stages » that you can flip through and the whole thing will take place in two days. Basically, the only thing missing is long queues in front of the toilets and food stands, equipment that you can easily recreate from home. Just pay your roommates to queue for a few hours in front of the bathroom door and voila: Splendid at home!
It offers a suitably packed line-up that can even keep up with the festival’s live personalities. Big draws include The Killers, Splendor Champion Denzel Curry, Tash Sultana, Phoebe Bridgers, local heroes The Chats, Charli XCX and a strange new project from superstar Grimes.
I would love to. As Newstead reports, Grimes ‘new project is a so-called“ AI girl group ”, born from the voices in the megastar’s head. Grimes has referred to the project as a « beta stage, » which means that Splendor audiences will be among the first in the world to experience the new technology.
You have two options as to how you will find yourself in the digital iteration of Splendor Find your way around The Grass: You can either create your own avatar or watch live streams from 70 different cameras. Both options sound pretty good to us – the element of character creation is going to be a lot of fun, and the artists have been encouraged to perform their sets from anywhere they see fit. Expect all kinds of weird backgrounds and unique setups.
The festival runs on the usual Splendor in the Grass dates, Saturday July 24th and Sunday July 25th. As usual, you can buy tickets for one or both days. All ticket details are available here.
Yes – the streams can be purchased on demand after the digital festival has ended. But that means you’ll miss out on wandering the place as a digital avatar, so visiting the actual festival is highly recommended.
