The fire broke out near the Elephant and Castle shopping center, but the exact cause is unknown. The Metropolitan Police said it was not believed to be linked to terrorism, the Daily Mail reports.

Six people were treated on site by paramedics, one was hospitalized after the fire. The London Fire Brigade used ten fire engines to fight the flames and urged people to avoid the area. Residents were also advised to keep the windows closed to avoid inhaling smoke.
