A cigar butt thrown away by Sir Winston Churchill and picked up by a police officer sold for over £ 4,200.
The item that was tossed aside by the war leader in the 1940s went under the hammer on Wednesday.
The 7 cm butt made a splash at auction after it was expected to sell for just £ 800.
The previous owner’s grandfather, Arthur Church, was a police officer at Scotland Yard in the 1940s.
While he was on the police force escorting Churchill, the Prime Minister smoked a cigar and Mr. Church picked up the discarded bum.
On Wednesday, the article met with great interest and was sold to a British private collector at a hammer price of Sold £ 3,500, rising to £ 4,270 with Buyer’s Premium.
The high price of the cigar butt shows the lingering taste at auctions for items that once belonged to Churchill.
