The Democratic Republic of the Congo is celebrating the end of its 12th Ebola outbreak just three months after the first case was reported.
The outbreak, which infected 12 people and killed six, was announced according to Médecins Sans Frontières or Doctors Without Borders contained due to an efficient vaccination campaign. More than 1,600 people who were in contact or otherwise connected with the infected were vaccinated.
The country saw a resurgence of the Ebola virus in February of this year, just months after it ended its 11th year . Had declared an outbreak that plagued the country between June and November 2020.
« Despite the security context and the COVID-19 pandemic, the speed and efficiency of the response launched by the government and its partners made it possible for this pandemic to emerge defeated in less than three months, « said Health Minister Jean-Jacques Mbungani of North Kivu Province as he announced the end of the outbreak.
Treatment of recent cases has been through the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the ongoing social Troubled riots that constrained healthcare workers to fight the virus. However, thanks to the efficient vaccination campaign, the country was better prepared for the outbreak this time than in previous outbreaks.

Several vaccines have been developed to fight the Ebola virus after the deaths of more than 11,000 people between 2014 and 2016. They were first used in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2019.
While Matshidiso Moeti, the World Health Organization’s regional director for Africa, praised the country’s response, she warned that it wasn’t the end of the disease itself.
» The local health workers and national authorities deserve great appreciation for their quick response, tenacity, experience and hard work in bringing this outbreak under control, « she said.
» Although the outbreak has ended, we must get up watch out for a potential resurgence while leveraging growing knowledge of emergency response measures to address other health threats the country faces. «
