Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Monday that reconciling the differences between New Zealand and China is becoming increasingly difficult as Beijing’s role in the world grows and changes.
In a speech on the China Business Summit in Auckland said Ardern that there are things that China and New Zealand « disagree, disagree » about, but added that those differences need not define their relationship.
« It will not have escaped anyone here that the differences between our systems – and the interests and values that shape those systems – are increasingly difficult to reconcile as China’s role in the world grows and changes, « said Ardern.
» This is a challenge with which we and many other countries in the Indo-Pacific, but also in Europe and other regions are also struggling, « she added.
The comments come because New Zealand is under pressure from some Western allies because it is unwilling to use the Five Eyes Alliance for Intelligence and Security, which includes Australia, the UK, Canada and the United States, to criticize Beijing.
Secretary of State Nanaia Mahuta said last month, She is uncomfortable with expanding the role of Five Eyes.
China, New Zealand’s largest trading partner, has accused the Five Eyes of partnering with China by making statements about Hong Kong and the treatment of ethnic Muslim Uyhgurs in Xinjiang .
Ardern said New Zealand will continue to discuss these issues both individually and through its partners. Managing relations with China will not always be easy and « there can be no guarantees, » added Ardern.
China is embroiled in a diplomatic dispute with Australia and has imposed trade restrictions after Canberra opted for an international investigation into the country Source of the coronavirus had started. Beijing denies the curbs are reprisals, saying that reduced imports of Australian products are the result of buyers’ own decisions.
« We hope that China too sees it in its own core interest in the world To act in ways that match his responsibilities as a growing power, including as a permanent member of the United States Security Council, « she added.
