Toronto FC acquired $ 200,000 in generic grant money from Orlando City SC on Tuesday in exchange for an international roster seat.
This is the second time in seven days that TFC has an international slot has traded away. On April 20, it sent one to FC Dallas for $ 225,000 in general grant money.
In 2021, Major League Soccer will have a total of 216 international squad spots, spread across 27 clubs. The roster slots are tradable and there is no limit to the number of international slots a team can have.
Toronto currently has seven international players – Ifunanyachi Achara (Nigeria), Auro (Brazil), Tsubasa Endoh (Japan) , Yeferson Soteldo and Erickson Gallardo (Venezuela), Chris Mavinga (France) and Alejandro Pozuelo (Spain) – in his first team roster.
However, players with injured reserves do not occupy a roster place, so the team currently only five of its seven international ones Slots uses – Achara and Gallardo with injured reserves.
Allocation money is money that is available to a club in addition to its salary budget. It can be used, among other things, to « buy » a player’s payroll fee, sign a player, or offset the player’s acquisition cost.
GM Ali Curtis said the allocation money received in recent trades was » somewhat related and helpful « with the acquisition of Soteldo. TFC could do another transaction or two in the next week, he added.
