Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, confused « Western Australia » with « Washington State » when he attempted to attack Democrats over COVID-19 restrictions on Wednesday, December 29th. He falsely claimed that Washington State has banned dancing in private homes on New Year’s Eve parties.
« Blue State Dems are power-drunk, authoritarian killers, » wrote Cruz on Twitter, for which he was heavily ridiculed. « Washington State: NO DANCING ALLOWED !!! Any reasonable citizen without &: Fuck off. » In his currently deleted tweet, screenshots of which soon went viral on social media, Cruz responded to a post that contained an image from a Facebook comment thread. On the comment thread, the WA government responded to a question about the pandemic restrictions to be put in place on New Year’s Eve by saying, « Dancing is strictly not allowed ». What Cruz didn’t know was that the comment thread was from the Western Australian government’s Facebook page, not Washington State.
