Ashley Lawrence and Kadeisha Buchanan from the former mountaineer won their gold medal game in women’s football for the Canadian national team.
After Team Canada lost 1-0 in the first half, the game equalized in the second half after a penalty and then won the game on penalties to give Canada the gold medal.
Both Lawrence and Buchanan played for West Virginia and came from Canada for it. Lawrence played for West Virginia between 2013 and 2016, scoring 13 goals and accounting for 25 assists throughout her career while playing in midfield. Buchanan played for West Virginia during the same period between 2013 and 2016, scoring seven goals and eight assists as a defender.
Team Canada beat Brazil and the United States and reached the final after qualifying from Group E, which included Japan, Great Britain and Chile.
This is both Lawrence and Buchanan’s second medal, having won bronze medals after the 2016 Olympics.
