CM – Unique Thompson, selected by Indiana Fever in the WNBA Draft

Unique Thompson was selected by the Indiana Fever in the second round of the WNBA Draft on Thursday.

Her selection makes Thompson Auburn’s ninth WNBA draft pick and the first Auburn player since DeWanna Bonner and Whitney Boddie in 2009.

During her freshman year, Alabama-born Theodore started in 27 of 29 games. She finished the season as the Tigers’ leading rebounder with 8.4 rebounds per game and with 11.5 points per game was the team’s third leading scorer on the way to becoming the SEC’s all-freshman team.

In the The following season, Thompson started in all 32 games and was the first Auburn player to average double-doubles since 1993. This made her the fifth player in program history to record this feat. She finished the season averaging 12.2 points and 10.3 rebounds per game, helping Auburn to a 22-10 overall record with a 9-7 record in the SEC. The Tigers reached the NCAA where they did lost to BYU in the round of 16.

Thompson’s junior and senior season turned out to be record breaking. The striker set the program record for career doubles as a junior and became program director for career rebounds as a senior.

Thompson overtook DeWanna Bonner for most career doubles and finished with 58 overall. Bonner ended her career in Auburn with 40 double doubles.

The rebound record was previously held by Becky Jackson, who played for the Tigers from 1980-84 and ended her career with 1,118 career rebounds. Thompson finished her career at Auburn with 1,156.

She again scored a double-double average in both seasons, making her the first player in program history to achieve a double-double average in three consecutive seasons.

After a junior season averaging 16.2 points and 11.4 rebounds in 29 games, Thompson was named a first-team All-SEC and named All-American by the Associated Press.

In her final season, Thompson averaged 17.6 points and 12.8 rebounds in 21 games. At the end of the season, she was recognized as a member of the second All-SEC team.
