« For me, a US Open is like a real golf test, every part of your game, every part of your mentality is needed to do well in this game.

» You have to get the ball, of course Drift into the fairway. I think the long hitters will have a bit of an advantage because there isn’t much trouble out here, just rough, and the further you are in the rough, the easier it is.

« I think the rough is actually too thick (and) actually takes away a bit of his ability. There are many times that you move around on the greens and it’s a bit of a hit and hope and a bit of luck.

“I’m very happy with my game. Tournaments are won on the greens. Give me a really good putting week and hopefully I’ll be there or nearby. ”

« If I play this golf course any other week, you play for free, and it’s exactly the same. You just have to be able to swing with that freedom and that’s what I’ll try to come back to.

“It’s no surprise that if I don’t have a great first day, for example, I can play the rest of the tournament well because that frees you. It’s like, okay, well, the bad is out of the way, and now I can kind of run free. It’s just a question of Thursday’s free run, not Friday.

« I think the US Open ’11 was only my third, and I played well at Bethpage in ’09, and made the cut in Pebble in ’10 lost. Yeah (there was) probably just a little less on my mind I think is the best way to describe it.

“Probably a little less cynical too. Sometimes I think you can dive into that mindset at the US Open.

“When I first saw Congressional, I thought I could see myself shooting out here. It’s the same as here. You hit fairways, you hit greens and you can shoot good scores. It’s just about going a little more positively into the tournament.

“I have a good feeling about where my game is. It’s about getting out there and playing as freely as possible and having this me

Low clouds and spotty fog are expected to start the day before the mostly sunny skies with highs just over 70 degrees will give way as we head to the return lighter onshore electricity. Friday through the weekend, the theme of the wonderful weather in San Diego continues.

Hole-by-hole guide to the South Course in Torrey Pines, venue of the 121st US Open from June 17th to 20th:

1., 446 yards, par 4: A slight dogleg to the right, where the two bunkers on the right are a 295-yard carry and the left 290 yards. The green is set at an angle with more sand on both sides.

2nd, 387 yards, par 4: Bunkers must be negotiated down the fairway and back around the green, with the positioning of the tee being crucial to get a birdie -Chance to achieve. The putting area has one step and is much wider at the back.

3rd, 195 yards, par 3: Pacific Ocean in the background and real problems left, right or long. A bunker guards the front and the green is split level which allows for some devilish pin placements.

4th, 486 yards, par 4: Hole runs along the cliff. The temptation is therefore to aim a little further to the right, but two bunkers lie in wait. A pear-shaped green where par is a real feat when the flag is tucked a short left over the trap.

5th, 452 yards, par 4: going back the other way requires a straight drive to avoiding the trees that line both sides. Green tilted again, dropping steeply to the right into a bunker and left into a shelf.

6th, 515 yards, par 4: The hole bends sharply to the right around the 280-yard mark, with a series of bunkers on the outside of the corner and trees and bushes on the right. The entrance to the green narrows and slopes into the sand on both sides.

7th, 460 yards, par 4: Another sweeping dogleg to the right, with a view of the green, which is covered by trees, when the Drive also just slightly to the right of the center. Hard, graduated green to hit because the angle means there’s little depth to work with.

8th, 173 yards, par 3: Wide but narrow target with bunkers in front and behind and one over the entire green running ridge. Framed by trees and that can make it very difficult to assess the wind.

9th, 609 yards, par 5: Two big shots just to get close to the green and not where You want to get tangled up with the rough. Long, thin green again at a slight angle and on two levels.

10th, 449 yards, par 4: Bunkers start at 270 yards on both sides, with the hole turning left to a green, the one to the left and right of more sand is guarded. Requires high accuracy both when driving and starting.

11th, 222 yards, par 3: The current that cuts just before the green shouldn’t be a problem for the world’s best, but the contours of the putting surface can cause all sorts of difficulties.

12th, 501 yards, par 4: Hard, tree-lined hole facing the sea. Bunker on the right cuts 275 yards into the fairway and the green slopes down on either side. If the flag is back left, par is a great score.

13th, 612 yards, par 5: Turns away from the ocean and plays longer than its yards because of the climb. A cluster of bunkers on the right and five more protect the green and practically block the entrance. Slopes make it difficult to get close if the hole is cut back to the left or right.

14th, 434 yards, par 4: Dramatic hole with danger on the far left and over a sloping green. Far from the longest par 4, but it might see the highest scores.

15th, 480 yards, par 4: Tree-lined hole where a drive that favors the left side of the fairway has a much better approach angle on the two-tier green creates. Can also be stretched to 513 yards with a new tee.

16., 223 yards, par 3: Really challenging par 3, especially when playing against the wind. Bushland and cliffs are just beyond the green with bunkers on either side and a transverse shelf.

17th, 440 yards, par 4: Problems on the left but getting too far to the right leaves a much more challenging one Second after a green with a tiny entrance between two bunkers and all sorts of contours.

18th, 568 yards, par 5: bunkers left and right, but the real feature of the hole is the lake just before the green. Safety-first option is to cut short, but many could be tempted by the risk-reward nature of a hole that could make or break the day.

golf

bonus

Golf is a numbers game even for Rory McIlroy, but he admits that the biggest challenge in ending his seven-year major drought is not his swing or the rough or the opponent, but the small voice in his head .

golf

There is hardly a more exciting sight in golf than Shane Lowry in full swing – the fluid swing, the bearded grin after a gentle blow with a wedge obediently sits next to the pin like a loyal hunting dog or the hissing foursome sharpen its intended target like a guided missile.
