CM – Violent winter storm blows up QLD: snow, rain

A winter storm powered by a violent polar explosion could hit Queensland starting today, producing rain, destructive winds and possibly snow.

Temperatures will plummet in south Queensland today as an unprecedented polar explosion hits the state, delivering rain, noxious winds, and potential snowfall.

The Bureau of Meteorology has said that « 20 million Australians will tremble » as a heavy chunk of polar air rises from the Southern Ocean.

Snow remains possible on the granite belt, but forecasters say a change in conditions could cause Queensland to fail.

« It’ll be cold enough, but it won’t let in much moisture at the right time, » said Sky News Weather meteorologist Rob Sharpe.

Stanthorpe is expected to drop as low as 2 ° C this morning before dropping to -2 ° C on Thursday morning and only hitting a maximum of 6 ° C during the day.

Brisbane residents are expected to wake up to a cold, wet Wednesday with a minimum of 12 ° C and up to 10mm of rain.

However, on Thursday morning it will be much colder as a minimum of 6 ° C and morning frost are forecast.

« It will be a lot colder by Thursday morning, especially south of Townsville. In some areas, nights will be more than 10 degrees colder than Monday and Tuesday nights. »

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for parts of the Main Range in southeast Queensland.

The residents were warned of harmful winds with peak gusts of up to 110 km / h.

A strong cold front and westerly winds are expected to cause a storm on the eastern slopes of the main range.

The storm will affect the areas between South Toowoomba and East Warwick. The winds are expected to develop before sunrise on Wednesday morning and likely to last until mid-morning.

Residents were advised to seek shelter, preferably indoors, to hide their cars or move away from trees, and to beware of fallen trees and power lines.
