Two Instagram influencers are in hot water over a video showing one of them painting a blue surgical mask on the other’s face to circumvent Covid guidelines and a supermarket in Bali, Indonesia to enter. Josh Paler Lin and Leia Se are now facing deportation for the video that they believe was only played for the entertainment of their supporters, Newsweek reports.
Josh and Leia, who are Taiwanese and Russian nationals, respectively, had instant a backlash when they first posted the video earlier this month. The video, which now appears to have been removed from her Instagram accounts but is still widely available online, shows her trying to enter a supermarket in Bali. Leia, who was not wearing a face mask, was stopped by a security guard at the entrance and the two returned to their car, where Josh painted a face mask on Leia’s face.
With blue makeup and white straps, the painted face mask looked real enough out to deceive the security guard when the duo returned to the grocery store.
Although the video was discontinued after Josh and Leia suffered severe setbacks for potentially putting other shoppers at risk, Niluh released Djelantik, a Balinese designer and politicians, the video again to ask the influencers to their prank.
Ms. Djelantik’s critical contribution drew attention to the video, reports The Smart Local. In her post, she asked the Directorate-General for Immigration to deport the two influencers, writing, “Don’t let these people step on Bali’s dignity.” Josh Paler Lin and Leia Se briefly closed their Instagram accounts after the backlash made privately. Josh released a video on Friday in which he and Leia and their lawyer officially apologized for the stunt.
Josh and Leia are now facing the possibility of deportation. According to Coconuts Bali, Indonesian immigration confirmed that their passports have been confiscated.
« They not only injure but are deliberately provoking in public. It is therefore only appropriate to sanction them more severely, not just with a fine, but also with a deportation, « said the chief of Satpol PP Bali, the police in the region.
