That Syracuse Orange will have fans for the first time since February 2020 at the season opener on Tuesday.

Syracuse reached 18-10 last season and was seeded No. 11 in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 last season. Orange this season wants to return to big dance this season. The Orange gives a hint of their latest campaign against Lafayette for the first time since 1995-1996.

Lafayette has never beaten the Orange, which holds an 8-0 record against the Leopards. Last season, Lafayette only played 15 games with a 9-6 record for third place in the Patriot League due to COVID-19.

The Leopards lost top scorers Justin Jaworski and E.J. Stephens, however, returns leading rebounder Neal Quinn, who averaged 5.5 rebounds and 10.6 points last season. Leo O’Boyle is also returning after averaging 8.5 points and three rebounds per contest last year. O’Boyle averages 37.1% from the three-point range.

« We want to compete against these teams, » said Lafayette head coach Fran O’Hanlon on Field Level Media. « We want to get out of there from the start if they throw it away. »

The Syracuse squad looks very different from last year. Marek Dolezja, Alan Griffin, Quincy Guerrier and Kadary Richmond are all gone – leaving a gap of 43.1 points per game. The Orange added key transfers in Cole Swider, Symir Torrence and Jimmy Boehim. The recruiting went well for Orange too, adding the four-star recruit Benny Williams.

« We have a lot of experienced guys, » Orange head coach Jim Boeheim told Athlon Sports. “We have more experience than we have for a long time. There is only one newbie and the rest are juniors, seniors and fifth year seniors. «

» But we have a lot of new people, « added Boeheim. « It will be interesting to see how it all fits together. »

Notable returning players include Bourama Sidibie, Frank Anselem, Jesse Edwards and Joe Girard III. Buddy Boeheim also returned, which means that the older Boeheim has two sons in his squad.

Last season Buddy Boeheim led the Orange with 17.8 points per game. Girard led the team with 3.5 assists and averaged 9.8 points per contest. Edwards achieved an average of 2.6 rebounds in 8.9 minutes of play.

In Tuesday’s matchup, two long-time head coaches are also represented with their respective programs. Boeheim has coached the Orange since 1976. O’Hanlon has been at the top of Lafayette for 26 seasons.
