DUBLIN, Ohio – Xander Schauffele started the week in ninth place on the PGA Tour in strokes won: putting. Most players with such a sublime advantage would be more than happy to leave well enough alone.
Not Schauffele, who switched to a new putter and wristlock putting grip at this week’s Memorial Tournament.
“Mine Putting coach, my whole team, to be honest, we are very much against change and I had to see what the excitement was about, ”said Schauffele. “I feel weird obviously being a top 10 putter on the tour, changing putters or changing putt style. That’s a clear advantage. ”
Schauffele said he started experimenting with the longer, wristlock-grip putter about a week ago, but the transition didn’t seem to have much of an impact on his play on the first day at Memorial where he was in third place after a first place – round 68 which included an advantage of 0.718 strokes on strokes won: putting.
« It’s better, it’s easier. It’s more consistent, ”he said. “We work a lot on the starting lines and make sure the ball does what we think it does. You can flinch with your hands, but not with your entire left arm. ”
Schauffele added that he believes that the wristlock putting style should be banned by the rules of golf, but as long as it allows he wanted to try.
“It takes the stress out of getting out of the game. Putting is so stressful in golf, obviously the strokes and chipping and all sorts of things are difficult, but your putts give you the score on the card, ”he said. « Turkey is an art in our game and if you can lock it in your arm or anchor it to your body, it somehow gets rid of it. »

Xander Schauffele made a late attack on one Green Jacket Sunday at Augusta National before a triple bogey at 16. They’re no longer winning at the breakneck pace they once were, but the vaunted class of 2011 is still a force at the top PGA tour.
