Happy Vallley preview and tips: Wednesday September 9

Hong Kong racing is at Happy Valley on Wednesday and there are eight races on the programme, with the first to get under way at 9:15pm (AEST).Here is our preview of the action …

The first Happy Valley race of the new season in Hong Kong is a Class 5 over the 1000m trip and in an open affair, SHOW MISSION (10) can go close at the each-way quote. The eight-year-old stepped out at the track and trip in the last meeting of the 2019/20 season and narrowly missed out behind Oversubscribed, finishing 3rd to that horse in a blanket finish. He was solid in the last half of that race and has performed well off similar breaks in the past. LA BOMBA (9) comes out of the same race and wasn’t far away in 5th position but will need luck from the barrier. GOUTEN OF GARO (5) is a possible leader that won in this grade over the 1000m here late last year before struggling in Class 4. He has trialled well and might take some running down. AURORA STEED (8) should be thereabouts.Selections: 10 – 9 – 5 – 8

This might be the one for UNIVERSAL GO GO (3) to end his run of outs. The six-year-old has not won since early 2019 but has placed in his past three runs and if he can run up to some of those performances, he can break the drought. The Francis Lui-trained galloper will look to settle in a midfield spot from barrier 9 and should be strong late in the race. He has finished in the top three in 11 of his 18 runs at the track and trip. CHARITY GRAND (6) creates interest. He dropped out of it at after tracking wide at his last run, which was back in April, but was close up in a couple of others last time and has drawn the inside barrier with Zac Purton to ride. The Aussie hoop opened up his account with a double at Sha Tin on Sunday. ELECTRIC LIGHTNING (7) was a winner at the track and trip two starts ago and comes into it with a genuine tempo. BIG BANG BONG (4) should be thereabouts.Selections: 3 – 6 – 7 – 4

This time it is the Class 4 gallopers that tackle the 1000m and NEXTMODEL (1) will be out to pick up from where he left at the end of the last season. The promising five-year-old was a big winner over the 1000m here on July 8 and comes into this with a winning trial. If Purton can cross over from the wide barrier without burning too much petrol early on, his mount should be hard to beat at the business end. FORZA ANGEL (3) was 3rd in the July 8 race and has three lengths to make up but is 4kg better at the weights. Include. Not too many of the other rivals come in with form that provides huge amounts of confidence. The David Hayes galloper G UNIT (2) can be an improver back in this grade and wasn’t too far away in some Class 3 races at the back end of last season. EVERBRAVE (10) is a lightweight contender that can land in the first four.Selections: 1 – 3 – 2 – 10

This might be the one for HARMONY N HOME (2) to break through for that elusive victory. The Charlie Shum-trained galloper has placed in four of his seven career starts to date with four of those coming at the track and trip. He generally races well with his runs spaced and at his most recent assignment he was wide and without cover throughout before sticking on for 3rd. He has drawn the paint with Purton on board and might just have a bit more upside in comparison to some of these. The danger might be MOMENTUM HAPPY (5), who has drawn wide but comes in with a winning trial and scored at the track and trip before the break. BULLISH BROTHER (6) will race on speed and has won two of his past three. He must be included on those efforts. THE ABRAXAS (12) is a lightweight contender and has placed in four of his past five runs.Selections: 2 – 5 – 6 – 12

Race 5 is another Class 4 over the 1200m and a number of these raced on the last night of the 2019/20 season with POWER KING (1) scoring over the 1200m that night, while JAZZ STEED (4) finished runner-up in a separate 1200m Class 4. The latter can go one spot better and closed off strongly behind Kinda Cool in the July 15 race, while he was a winner over the 1000m prior to that. He caught the eye in a recent trial at Sha Tin and will be hard to beat. Power King rises in weight but remains in contention. DIAMOND RHYME (9) was 4th behind Power King and meets that rival 4kg better at the weights. He is another that has trialled well and will sit on the speed. HERE COMES TED (6) needs luck from the gate but finished off last season in good form and should be around the mark.Selections: 4 – 1 – 9 – 6

We rise to Class 3 level for what shapes as an interesting betting race and ALPHA HEDGE (1) should be hard to beat. The lightly-raced seven-year-old races well at the track and trip and finished in the top two at his last three runs at the back end of last season. He defeated Methane on June 24 before narrowly missing out behind Cinquante Cinq following that. He has drawn barrier 3 and is another key chance for Purton. LIGHTNING STEED (10) is a likely leader and will be ridden by Purton’s rival, Moreira. The six-year-old started to deliver on some of his talent late last season, winning two at Class 4 level before rising to this grade and finishing runner-up behind Golden Spectrum over the 1800m. He will take some running down. NAMJONG PLUS (5) is a potential blowout runner and has performed well in the past when fresh. He gets the claim for Victor Wong and will relish a solid tempo up front. FLYING SWORD (4) is an on pacer that is in the mix for a first four finish.Selections: 1 – 10 – 5 – 4

Some promising types line up in Race 7 of the night and CALIFORNIA RAD (1) shapes as a major player for the Tony Cruz stable. The four-year-old has finished in the top two in his past five runs and should progress to Class 2 this season. He was a big winner here two starts ago before drawing wide and sticking on for a narrow miss on July 15. He has won a trial in the interim and is the one to beat. LITTLE BIRD (2) wasn’t too far away in late season runs and is another that comes in with a winning trial. He will settle on the speed, as will AURORA PEGASUS (5), who has drawn the inside gate. The lightly raced six-year-old won three on the trot last year before tapering off at his next two. Monitor betting. TRIPLE TRIPLE (10) drops back to the 1200m and can challenge with just the 52.5kg. Moreira rides.Selections: 1 – 2 – 5 – 10

The meeting concludes with the second of the Class 3 races over the 1200m and GUY DRAGON (5) should enjoy what shapes as a genuine tempo. The new addition to the Casper Fownes stable likes to get back in his runs and ran home to finish just out of the money at his last few runs of the recent season. He drops back to the 1200m and is at the Valley for the first time but his trainer does have an excellent record at the venue. Pace to come from the likes of LORIZ (8), who was a winner here four starts ago before placing twice at Sha Tin. FANTASY (1) missed out over the 1400m at Sha Tin at his last start but drops back to the 1200m and has an excellent record at the distance. He will attract support with Moreira to steer from barrier 1. Monitor betting moves for CANTSTOPTHEFEELING (10), who was a big trial winner recently and carries just 52.5kg.Selections: 5 – 8 – 1 – 10
