How bad can things get for the New York Jets under head coach Adam Gase? It looks like we’ll find out
NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport reported on Thursday that despite starting the season 0-3, Gase is not at risk of losing his job if the Jets lose their Thursday night football game to the Denver Broncos
As tonight’s game against the Denver Broncos approaches on the NFL network, it doesn’t look like Gase’s job is on hold pending the game’s outcome According to those with knowledge of the decision-making, it is believed that shooting Gase would not only be counterproductive in general, but also potentially damaging for quarterback Sam Darnold
At first glance, this sounds hilarious The Jets aren’t just 0-3 they’ve lost those games by a combined score of 94-37 They’ve lost their last two games by a combined score of 67-20 Sometimes, they looked like a high school JV team that accidentally wandered into a stadium and ended up facing a professional soccer team It sounds like the plot of a heartwarming sports movie, but it isn’t These are the actual Jets, who are apparently a professional football team
It’s also hard to see how replacing Gase just four games into the season would hurt Darnold, who was let down by Gase and pretty much everyone in the Jets organization regardless of how everyone sees his overall talent and potential, he is expected to do an extraordinary job for the Jets while surrounded by an assemblage of dubious talent and terrible coaches
Beyond the mess on the ground, Gase only gives the organization terrible public relations He is intense and off-putting The answers he gives to every question seem to come from a world that only exists in his own head
During a Zoom call on Tuesday, Gase said he liked the approach and general attitude of his 0-3 team, and here’s how he described it Via Newsday:
« Guys are talking about how to clean things up, what we need to do to fix things, » Gase said on a Zoom call Tuesday afternoon. « Guys are trying to figure out the little details of the issues from us and how can we fix it?
« I like that guys are looking for solutions instead of [swearing] and complaining and not really working in the right direction I feel our guys are looking for the right things, looking for the solutions to problems «
The team is 0-3 and often seems to struggle with basic football skills There are no “little details” about the issues There are big obvious reasons that honk And even if it’s good that they don’t ‘complain’, maybe they should be
Gase says his guys are looking for solutions to problems, but what exactly is he doing? Does he change anything in response to the blazing, smelly trash fire his team have looked like in the first three games of the season?
Continuing to use Gase seems like the most counterproductive thing the Jets can do But despite a long list of reasons not to do it, they seem bound and determined to keep doing it
