Covering the impact of coronavirus on the sports world

After a four-month wait, the Kentucky Derby weekend is finally here. The Run for the Roses — and the huge weekend of thoroughbred racing that comes with it in Louisville — has been pushed back by the COVID-19 pandemic. Much is different about this year — the Derby is the second jewel of the Triple Crown, and there won’t be any fans in attendance at Churchill Downs.

Much, though, is the same, as the Kentucky Oaks will see the top three-year-old fillies take on 1 1/8 miles on the dirt on Friday before a field of the top three-year-old colts takes center stage on Saturday.

Which horse wins the Kentucky Derby? Which massive long shot is a must-back? And what Derby-Oaks double bets do you need to make? Visit SportsLine to see Jody Demling’s picks for the 2020 Kentucky Derby, all from the top expert who’s nailed nine Derby-Oaks doubles.

Even though the Derby hats will be worn in the living room and the mint juleps will be made in the kitchen this year, there’s still plenty of action in all of the races on the card at Churchill Downs for this unprecedented Derby weekend. SportsLine has you covered for the Oaks-Derby double and also if you’re looking for a lean on the races individually.

Stay with CBS Sports for updated odds for both the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby and the latest movement on the board at Churchill Downs.

A field of nine three-year-old fillies will leave the starting gate for the Oaks, and the Baffert-trained Gamine is even a bigger favorite now. After opening on Monday as an even-money favorite, the filly has dropped to 3-5.

Gamine has never trailed in four career starts. Two starts ago, she won the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes by 18¾ lengths. Her only « loss » came after she was disqualified after crossing the finish line first three starts ago at Oaklawn Park.

The Ken McPeek-trained Swiss Skydiver, who has won four of her last five starts, is 5-2, up from 8-5.

The Derby is down to 16 horses after Friday’s scratch of long shot Finnick the Fierce. Co-owner Arnaldo Monge said veterinarians had expressed concern about how the 3-year-old gelding was moving, but Monge believes the horse « carries himself a little funny » because he’s blind in his right eye and that nothing is wrong with the horse.

Out of precaution, the connections nevertheless scratched Finnick the Fierce, who was a 50-1 long shot.

Prior to the scratch, Finnick the Fierce had been known as the only horse in the Derby to have finished ahead of the favorite, Tiz the Law. The two horses finished second and third in the Kentucky Jockey Club in November.
