Barcelona continue their winning streak with a 4-0 victory over Elche
Barcelona extended their lead at the top of La Liga to 15 points with a comfortable 4-0 win over Elche. Robert Lewandowski scored twice, ending his four-match goal drought, while Ansu Fati and Ferran Torres also found the net. The win allowed coach Xavi to experiment with his squad ahead of their Copa del Rey semi-final clash with Real Madrid on Wednesday. Elche, who played under new coach Sebastian Beccacece for the first time, are currently bottom of the table and never looked like troubling the runaway league leaders.
Lewandowski back to his lethal best
Lewandowski’s two goals took his tally to 17 for the season, making him the top goalscorer in the league. The Polish forward had been enduring a small dip in form recently, but his performance against Elche showed that he is back to his lethal best. Fati also found the net for the first time since October, while Torres rounded out the comfortable win. Xavi was able to play some reserve players, including 19-year-old midfielder Aleix Garrido, in the final stages of the match.
Barcelona dominated the game, securing their 20th clean sheet of the season in the top flight. Gavi pulled the strings in midfield, while Lewandowski broke the deadlock after 20 minutes with a scuffed finish that looped over a defender and into the net. Fati stretched Barcelona’s advantage 10 minutes into the second half, running from the halfway line before drilling into the bottom corner. Lewandowski pounced again after Gavi won the ball back for the third and then played a fine long ball to Torres, who drifted inside and slotted home the fourth.
Barcelona’s procession towards the title continues, and if they continue to win their games, they will be crowned champions. Champions Madrid, who are currently second, host Real Valladolid on Sunday.
