Argentina were unable to conjure up a repeat of their historic victory against three-time world champions New Zealand as an emotional occasion ended in a 0-38 defeat.
Attempts by Dane Coles, Ardie Savea and Patrick Tuipulotu as well as two hits by substitute Will Jordan helped the All Blacks to avenge the shock suffered between 25 and 15 two weeks ago.
The bonus points win for Ian Foster’s men in their final game in 2020 puts them in pole position to win the Tri-Nations tournament and prevents them from losing three games in a row for the first time since 1998.
As their homeland is still in a time of national mourning, the Pumas played as the first Argentine team since the death of the great football player Diego Maradona on Wednesday.
Before kick-off at the McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle, Australia, New Zealand captain Sam Cane put an All Blacks jersey with the words « Maradona 10 » on his back.
Argentina coach Mario Ledesma made 10 changes to the team that drew Australia last weekend, and his side was fortunate enough to make it through Coles’ attempt in the 12th. Minute and a change and a penalty from Richie Mo in the break only 10-0 to lose ‘unga.
New Zealand added four points to the shine earned by its dominant second period performance, each converted by Mo’unga.
Savea started after a line-out before Jordan’s first international attempts, and a stoppage-time attempt by substitute Tuipulotu resulted in a clear win.
New Zealand leads the table with 11 points, Argentina and Australia with six points and significantly worse point differences before a meeting in the final of the competition next weekend.
