Mighty Senator Jacqui Lambie has stepped up her efforts to create a royal suicide commission with the coalition’s plans for a national commissioner in ruins.
The Morrison government’s bill to create a national commissioner for defense and suicide prevention for veterans is insufficient to get the Senate passed.
A liberal-chaired Senate committee has called for support for the legislation but has recommended that the government consider whether the commissioner should cover attempted suicide.
The report also encourages the government to consider a role review and to consider the importance of independence in the appointment of the Commissioner.
Labor and Senator Lambie issued dissenting reports demanding that the bill be rejected in the House of Lords.
« This is a bill designed to help veterans and their families. But families don’t want that. Veterans don’t want that, « wrote Senator Lambie.
Senator Lambie said the commissioner would be subject to the power and influence of the government while a major investigation would not worry about continued survival.
Labor Senators Tim Ayres and Kimberley Kitching fear the commissioner could become a glorified coroner who is keeping the hearings secret.
The opposition report echoes Senator Lambie’s fears that veteran families have been ignored in their demands for a royal commission in place of the new role.
« This is an important litmus test and a bloody indictment of the bills, and it shows exactly why they shouldn’t be passed, » wrote the Labor Senators.
A nation’s two senators support the new commissioner, but the government lags behind in support for the legislation.
