TEMPO. CO, Jakarta – United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) chairman Benny Wenda said he was ready to discuss Papuan and West Papuan issues with President Joko Jokowi Widodo. Benny recently declared himself interim president of the Provisional Government of West Papua.
« I am ready to sit down with President Widodo from state to state and agree on a process to finally end this conflict through an internationally mediated mechanism, » Benny said in a written statement from Tempo on Friday, Dec.. . 4, 2020.
Benny stated that West Papuan had to decide and that his side was ready to work on an independence referendum agreement.
He also noted that there is no time for military operations in Papua and called on the Indonesian government to give UN high commissioners free access to visit and monitor the situation in Papua.
« President (Jokowi) must end martial law in West Papua and sit down to discuss this issue, » said Benny.
The ULMWP declared on 1. December 2020, a Provisional Government within the territory of Indonesia with the aim of mobilizing people in West Papua and Papua. Benny, who asserted himself as interim president, said the goal was to hold a referendum on independence.
Indonesia rejected Benny Wenda’s statement. The Minister of Coordination for Politics, Law and Security, Mahfud Md, viewed the maneuver as treason.
