LATEST: MASSIVE rainfall was recorded in parts of the northern rivers today, with Lismore recording 200mm from 9am to 5pm and Tuckurimba recording a whopping 219mm.

« A wide, low-pressure trough lies over NSW and draws a humid and choppy air mass into the state, creating local showers and thunderstorms and the possibility of serious falls, » BoM explained on its website.

« The rains in the Northern Rivers district have become very persistent, with some heavy rains building up on Wednesday, causing flooding.

« Heavy rains, which can cause flash floods, are currently occurring in the Northern Rivers district and may continue until tonight.

« A flood watch for river flooding is also up-to-date for the Northern Rivers district, and several rivers in this region have up-to-date flood warnings.

« Locations that may be affected are Lismore, Grafton, Byron Bay, Ballina, Casino, Brunswick Heads, Evans Head, Yamba and Maclean. «  »

UPDATE, 4. 30pm: THE SES urges people to stay out of Lismore’s CBD as heavy rain continues to hit the city.

An SES spokesman said they had received more than 100 calls for help and carried out nine flood rescues.

There is currently no official evacuation order for the CBD, but the SES says people should avoid the area entirely.

« We are seeing businesses in the CBD being affected by Lismore. If people don’t have to be there, they should go.

« People should monitor the NSW SES Facebook page and the Bureau of Meteorology website for updated warnings.

UPDATE, 3. 55 a.m .: Since 9 a.m., more than 170 mm of rain has been registered in Lismore.

There have been some concerns from local residents and business owners that Browns Creek pumps were not turned on or were not working properly, causing flash floods in the CBD.

The council stated on its Facebook page: « Sometimes when it rains really badly, the pumps can’t always keep up and we see temporary flooding in the levee around Dawson and Uralba Street. «  »

The council also announced that the Recycling & Recovery Center on Wyrallah Road has been closed due to flash floods.

Flooding also causes heavy traffic in Lismore’s CBD, particularly on Dawson Street between Leycester Street and Magellan Street.

UPDATE, 2. 40 o’clock: With more than 100 mm of rain in Lismore within two hours, the SES was showered with calls for help.

An SES spokesman said they received more than 70 calls in a « chaotic » situation.

« We respond to flash floods, requests for help with sandbags, that sort of thing, » he said.

Flash floods resulted in sudden road closures across the CBD and East Lismore this afternoon.

According to the Bureau of Meterology, Lismore had more than 100mm of rain in just two hours.

In Lismore’s CBD, workers move their cars quickly from rising flash floods after several vehicles go underground.

Cars were flooded in the John Crowther parking lot after flash floods swept the area just after 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

Traffic is now secured by the CBD as the exit routes towards Dawson St are flooded.

Rachael of Katrina Beohm Real Estate swept water from her East Lismore office after water flooded as people drove down the street and signs on Wyrallah Road closed.

Other shopkeepers on Wyrallah Road were also angry with drivers who ignored road closures and sent water to their stores.

« The councilors trying to take control of the traffic and stop the idiots from washing themselves are gold. «  »
