Weltnachrichten – AU – Eagle flies again: Venables gets another chance

. . The AFL dream stays alive for forgotten Premier Eagle Daniel Venables after today's rookie draft, while Fremantle also re-signed a familiar face.

. .

Concussion victim Daniel Venables remains a chance to resume his career next year after West Coast re-listed the Premier League on that morning’s Rookie Draft.

Venables has not played since losing to Melbourne in the ninth round in 2019 – 19 months ago.

In a car accident, Venables’ head connected to the waist of Melbourne’s Tim Smith and then to the lawn of Optus Stadium after he returned with the flight of the ball.

The 22-year-old Victorian is expected to return to Perth in January to begin a modified training program.

The Eagles remain cautious about his AFL return prospects and will take a gentle, gentle approach. But a significant improvement in his health gave cause for hope.

Venables could access payout for retirement injuries when he is no longer able to play through the AFL Players’ Association Injury and Hardship Fund.

West Coast has re-listed Venables, who played 21 games including the 2018 big final win after picking Swan Districts midfielder Zane Trew with Pick 12 in the rookie draft.

Fremantle striker Bailey Banfield was given a career lifeline when the Dockers listed him again. Fremantle also took on 194cm Bendigo Pioneers key forward Josh Treacy with pick seven.

Banfield has only played 12 games in the last two seasons, having started his 20-game career in 2018 when he took on some key marking roles.
