The last few months have been intoxicating for KL Rahul on a personal level. He won the Orange Cap in the recently completed IPL after accumulating 670 runs and earned praise for his captain by making a sensational turn in the fate of the Kings XI Punjabs in the second half. Then, out of the blue, he was named runner-up in the limited overs series against Australia, which began on Friday.

Rahul has loved taking on extra responsibilities since his age group and he will have his hands full on this series. Rahul will not only act as Virat Kohli’s deputy, but will also continue to put on the wicketkeeping gloves. With Rohit Sharma in action with a hamstring injury, he may have to step in for the opener too.

« I think I got a feel for the IPL, » Rahul said of the challenge of dealing with multiple responsibilities. After a training session in Sydney on Thursday, he interacted with the media. « I had to play a similar role there too. It was a challenge, it was new. I think I got used to this role and enjoyed it. Hopefully I’ll continue here as well. « 

« When you play for your country, you have 11 of the best guys from your country, » he said. « They are all skilled, they all have great cricket minds, they have a great understanding of themselves. We have a capable and passionate leader like Virat who will always be there for the young. I am looking forward to the new tasks. Every player looks forward to it. It’s a very proud moment. Hopefully I can continue to do the same, maybe be a step or two ahead and make sure the team environment is great, the players are hungry and looking forward to winning games for their country. ”

The start of the Australia series, in which India plays three ODIs, three T20Is and four Tests, marks the beginning of an important countdown. Next year India will host the T20 World Cup, Australia will host the same event in 2022 and India will host the 50-Over World Cup in 2023. The competition for a place in the squad is getting intense. Rahul, who the team management now sees as a specialist wicketkeeper batsman, said he will endeavor to wear the national colors at all tournaments.

« Of course world championships are very, very important and that is the long vision for every team and every country, » said Rahul. « When it comes to me, it only takes one game at a time. Obviously, if I continue to perform consistently with the bat and gloves, we have the option to play an additional bowler or batsman. It just helps the team combination a little bit more, which I personally would love to do. If the opportunity presents itself, I can take part in all three world championships. I would like to do it for my country. « 

The India-Australia series has grown into a marquee cricket event and Rahul said the entire team is looking forward to the tour. « We’re playing for the country after a while and we’re all really excited to go out there and play aggressive cricket. Australia is a difficult place. We enjoyed coming here and competing and playing tough and aggressive cricket. It’s important that we start well and play one game at a time.

« Australia is a really, really competitive team and their threat is that they’ll roll together as a unit. I’ve played Australia a couple of times and found that they play well together as a pack, especially as a bowling unit. «
