Lando Norris says a combination of poor timing and failure to get a clean lap stranded him on Saturday night in Sakhir in the second quarter.
The McLaren driver had to abandon his first attempt in the second qualifying segment due to traffic while failing to overtake his second lap, leaving the British on Sunday 15th. Overall ranked.
« The first run was fine, a mistake, but it was still a decent lap, » said Norris.
« But we basically went out too early in the second quarter, which meant I had to do a very slow out lap to make sure I didn’t catch the traffic at the end or halfway through.
« That meant the tires were a bit colder and not ideal for Turn 1. And if there are only four corners and the tires aren’t in Turn 1, you only have three corners to make up for time and that’s not really possible so I had to abandon.
« On my second lap there was again no traffic at Turn 1, but there were a few people around me, which meant that I lost a lot of time. And then just one more combination where you don’t drive the perfect lap for the rest.
« So yeah, just not really a clean Q2. A small mistake on our part as a team, knowing when to go out and start our run, but also my opportunity to do a lap.
« I just didn’t do the perfect job. Those two things together put me where I was. «
Carlos Sainz did better than his team mate on Saturday evening and qualified for P8. However, the sum of the results of both drivers left the McLaren team with their work on Sunday to maintain their lead over Racing Point and Renault in the tough battle of F1 for third place in the constructors’ championship.
« It’s a good day for us, because after the third RP we got the 12th. and 13. respected, and we’re not that bad, « said the Spaniard.
« We may have to look in the mirror more than ahead tomorrow, but it is what we have and we will try to fight for it. «
