A police officer took his own life in the NSW Police headquarters in Sydney.

The apparent suicide occurred Monday morning in an office at the Sydney Police Center in Surry Hills.

Initial investigations show the man’s death was not suspect, a spokesman for NSW police said, and a report is being prepared for the coroner.

A spokesman for the NSW Police Association said the union is aware of the death and will support those affected.

The death resulted from a number of police suicides including a senior police officer in the New England area.

Police suicides in recent years have led to discussions about the high pressure nature of the work and whether the officers receive adequate support.

A coronal investigation into the suicide of a former officer, Ashley Bryant, in 2013 highlighted the psychological ramifications of policing, including the stress of constantly being alert to danger and being in contact with crime victims.

The investigation found that NSW police were working to help their members cope with the « extreme stressors » they were facing, although more had to be done.

Earlier this month, the Herald reported concerns from current and former police officers about the culture within the force.
