The Territorial Government continues its fight against gamba grass and is launching the Gamba Action Program 2020-2021 today.

The Gamba Action Program is part of the Territory Labor Government’s electoral commitment to tackle this harmful weed.

Along with the creation of the 45-strong Gamba Army, this program will continue to support jobs and the environment.

Gamba grass is a highly invasive weed that generates large amounts of fuel and is easily burned, putting life, property and the environment at risk. Therefore we must do everything together to control this.

The 100. $ 000 program is helping more than 2,000 landowners gain access to free equipment rentals and herbicide to spray these invasive weeds.

Up to 10 liters of free herbicide are available to landowners to control gamba grass – and 20 liters are available if you own multiple lots.

The Gamba Action Program is one of eight programs within the Gamba Management Framework that provides a solid approach to Gamba management, fire reduction, fuel reduction and infestation control.

The weed control department running the program works closely with Bushfires NT and the Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service to minimize the risk of dry season bush fires caused by excessive fuel loads from gamba grass. .

The Territory Labor Government takes gamba control seriously and invests approximately $ 6 million annually in weed control, including gamba grass. We have created a dedicated Crown Land Weeds Officer, increased funding for Bushfires NT to support volunteer brigades, and built a new state-of-the-art facility for Bushfires NT to improve our fire response and the Gamba Army.
