Super Smash Bros. . Ultimate has reached a point where most players cannot believe what they are seeing on the battlefield. It was added to Minecraft’s Steve and Alex by Sonic the Hedgehog and Pac-Man, and now the latest reveal is Final Fantasy VII’s antagonist Sephiroth.
Among them is Rare’s famous duo Banjo-Kazooie. In Sephiroth’s trailer at this year’s Game Awards, Bear and Bird were even seen in a scene alongside Inkling and Sonic. How does it feel for Banjo and Kazooie’s dad, Steve Mayles? A fan asked him this question not long after the new fighter was revealed on Twitter. In summary, it’s bittersweet:
A few other tweets noted that Nintendo has achieved essentially more with Banjo-Kazooie than Microsoft has done in recent years:
« It’s so cool to see them animated with modern graphics. The character design for her is so appealing if you just look at it. It’s a shame Microsoft doesn’t even use them as a mascot for promotional materials. «
Banjo’s last real outing on Xbox was Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts during the 360 generation in 2008, and back then not everyone was a fan of the game’s vehicle construction mechanics, which were arguably ahead of its time.
Steve mentions that there is « still hope » for Banjo-Kazooie in the future. What do you think about it? Do you think this character deserves a little more love from Microsoft? Should Rare revive this iconic mascot? Share your thoughts below.
If he doesn’t repay Tom Nook a loan, Liam enjoys covering the latest Nintendo news and admires his library of video games. His favorite character at Nintendo used to be a dog who played guitar, but now he prefers to hang out with Judd the cat.
As a fan, I long for a BK game that looks just as good as it does in this trailer. Since Perfect Dark is getting a restart and Battletoads already has a restart, I hope Banjo and Kazooie won’t be forgotten for so long.
I think they should make a new game that is closer to the style of the first two while also introducing some new ideas. Nuts and Bolts felt too much like any other game in the banjo world, and the meta-jokes making fun of collectathons were just an insult to the fans.
@AnnoyingFrenzy Yeah Perfect Dark and Battletoads indicate that they are at least revisiting old IPs. What people need to know is that any BK game would only be armored on Xbox One. There weren’t enough units, especially in the target group. Nowadays, with Game Pass on multiple devices, it could work pretty well in my opinion.
Because we really want to know everything about a series that has not even sold 7 million times in 22 years.
I’m from someone who’s never really been nostalgic about banjo kazooie. Yes, I would love to see them make a real return, if only to see the fans’ reactions when they finally get a real new game.
@nessisonett One can hope that it certainly looks more promising now than it has been in years.
Microsoft, when they turn 50. Making Gears of War and Halo games instead of a game that has been implored for literally decades:
I always regretted not getting this on N64 when I got the chance. Having never bought a Microsoft console (I never could justify owning all 3, and Sony and Nintendo cover everything but Rare I want to play), sadly, I’ve never played banjo-kazooie outside of Smash. Hope that changes one day and at least they come to VC.
That’s such a simple question. Of course they should bring her back. I would buy banjo-threeie right now.
I hope we get a new banjo and kazooie game, Yooka and Laylee were fine, but the bear and bird duo would probably be a lot better.
I hope when the Switch gets GBA games they put the banjo and kazooie on it
Couldn’t Nintendo just buy them back? Do you make a Disney train like Sony’s Spider-Man? I would like to buy a new banjo game!
@AG_Awesome I actually had fun with banjo on GBA. Was a good time. Not a bad way to get the series isometric.
If you’re not using the IP, consider selling it back to Nintendo, just as Disney sold Power Rangers back to Saban.
@nessisonett @AnnoyingFrenzy Y’all forget about Killer Instinct, and that annoys me. I child. Apparently Microsoft has other studios working on these rare titles, so I hope they work with a team that actually knows how to get a damn good 3D platform to collect. Playtonic would make sense, but personally I think Gears for Breakfast is the team I would hire.
While it was fun to see them at the Game Awards, I wish Rare and Microsoft actually did SOMETHING with the franchise. Even if her next entry was the last on the series, I would at least feel some closure. At the moment, it doesn’t seem like the modern rarities are taking their heritage for granted, and that’s a massive shame.
@KayFiOS I could never forget Killer Instinct, I just didn’t record it because that was at the beginning of the last generation compared to Perfect Dark and Battletoads which were this year. Killer Instinct 2013 is actually my second favorite fighting game. If you look at my profile I have a picture of Sabrewulf (my head) as a banner.
Look on the good side – it’s better that they look this amazing than the Nuts and Bolts incarnation. If Perfect Dark can get a new game, Banjo-Kazooie can too!
I would buy a BK game on Switch right away – although I suspect it would only end up there as an Xbox / PC exclusive after a short while since it is owned by Microsoft.
I would love a switch version. . . . . a true banjo threeie? Yooka scratched her itch, but I miss a real follower: /
I love banjo and kazooie. Microsoft rarely buys and basically sitting on it sucks for us. .
@ backup368 Yes, we really are! By the way, how many games have you ever made sold? 7 million is hardly something to be ashamed of if you only play two real games on a low-selling console. Banjo Kazooie was the greatest 3D platformer of all time in the eyes of many people when it came out, and is still in the top 5 of many people today. Do us a favor, play COD and FIFA again lol and leave us alone!
I’m almost 100% sure that we’ll get a remake of Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie with updated graphics, as well as Activision with Crash Bandicoot and Spyro and Nickelodeon with Spongebob: Battle for Bikini Bottom.
sighs I wish the stars would light and Rare gives people what they want. I’m tired of seeing these guys show up on occasion and everyone gets foggy and nostalgic! 😂 Seriously. It would be great to see a real return! I still remember the great trailer for the last game. I wish I wanted the final product as much.
Virtually every video game publisher has at least one important, still popular IP address that for some reason they haven’t touched in years or decades, often despite numerous fan requests. Nintendo has F-Zero and Advance Wars to name a few. Konami has Suikoden and pretty much their entire catalog outside of Metal Gear and Castlevania. Sega has barely bothered with anything other than Sonic in nearly two decades.
Of course, most or all of them can be traced back to one basic thing: money / profit margins. Probably the most fundamental problem with Banjo-Kazooie is that its publisher Rare was bought by Microsoft, whose XBox consoles are primarily aimed at FPS fans and rated games. That might not be the only reason, of course, but demographics absolutely play a role in determining projected sales and profitability.
The only thing gamers can do about it is vote with our wallets. If ever the opportunity arises to support the return of a beloved franchise company, it is imperative that we step on the table and support them (preferably from day one to improve the above earnings numbers). . Ultimately, gamers are passionate about games, but companies are passionate about money. To get what we want we have to speak their language.
I mean, if there is such a thing as a time to comeback, it is now. With Spyro and Crash returning with so much success, it’s hard to believe that Banjo isn’t making a great comeback either. Provided it’s done right, of course.
Speaking of Pac-Man, he probably hasn’t been in a Smashbtrailer cameo in a while. . Nor was he in the world of light opening. . .
How was that a cameo? They are playable characters in the game. If that was a cameo, then every other character in the video was a cameo too. Makes no sense.
@ backup368 I hate this logic that it’s the fans’ fault that there isn’t a classic banjo game because they refused to buy nuts and bolts. It never makes sense when applied to a series. Why should the game we want be held hostage behind games we don’t want? There is nothing wrong with branching out and experimenting, but the reason people use nuts and bolts, Chibi Robo Zip Lash, modern day Paper Mario, Metroid Prime Federation Force, etc.. To hate. That’s because the classic games we fell in love with haven’t seen the light of day in years or decades. Instead, we’re served things that no one asked for. Do you want fans to buy your games? Make the games your fans want.
Hah! The moment you click on a message and see your best friend’s tweet, they hit the headlines. I would love a new BK, but I don’t think anything can capture that magic from the original game. The games industry has evolved, and so have we.
I would have loved to hear Banjo hit the first two notes of One Winged Angel on his banjo.
@KayFiOS Playtonic wouldn’t make sense. The poor haven’t learned anything from Donkey Kong 64 or the last 20 years from Mario platformer – sadly, Yooka Laylee is one of the worst collectathons in years.
I mean, given the comfortable relationship between Nintendo and Microsoft, is there any hope that the Banjo Kazooie property could ever be bought by Nintendo? I think it would be a win-win-win situation. Microsoft is getting good press and money, Nintendo is getting a popular trait associated with the N64, and fans are losing their collective minds. Just my two cents. Lol
@ Duffman92 great point, totally agree. Platforms are making a comeback, especially when it comes to 90s nostalgia. This is the time for Banjo Kazooie.
@norwichred No, no, you forgot the one that definitely suits Nintendo, the mother series. What they did with this series is basically the same as Microsoft except it’s worse because at least Banjo & Kazoore has re-released all the games for the past few years, even if that was 2015.
@ backup368 You mean the terrible game that didn’t even fit the Artstyle identity of the franchise, let alone functioned as a 3D collectathon platform for vehicle construction? Nuts and Bolts was a bad game as evidenced by fan reactions and fan / pro reviews, a number of YouTube retrospectives (JonTron as an entertaining highlight) and the tanking of the franchise even in the hands of money-hungry Microsoft.
I think fans are stupid not to have bought Sonic Boom and should have felt blessed to have the original terrible movie design for Sonic. You know what? Maybe Mario should have taken a long break after Super Mario Sunshine. You are that. That’s how you sound, you revisionist opponent.
@BoyfriendOfDeath Okay, the same idea still applies. . . Let Nintendo « rent » them. Develop a game, share the winnings, everyone wins.
I’m still playing the two originals on my N64 with an Eon Super 64 adapter. I would love if they were ported to Switch. No fancy remake required. Whatever happens to the series, I hope it makes it to the Switch / current Nintendo system. It would be most grateful there.
In the meantime, I’ve really enjoyed Yooka Laylee. Both games are fantastic and definitely add that BK vibe.
@ KingBowser86 But fans are complaining that Microsoft is « basically sitting on Rare ». Rare custom IPs never sold well. Rare had made games like Conker: Live and Reloaded, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Viva Pinata and Kameo and they flopped. If you had supported your favorite character the way you should have, the series might have gone on. Sea of Thieves is by far Rare’s most successful game – wasn’t even their own idea.
Forgive me if I don’t see the parallels between Rare’s success and the demand for the games Nintendo fans want from them.
RARE and its features should be bought back to Nintendo. MS got Jack all done with their IPs and they just rot in the shade because of it.
Please return it to Nintendo. I miss my classic jungle platformer, conspiratorial shooter, and science fiction adventure. . .
What I would give to play Eternal Darkness again. . This game haunts my dreams to this day.
@RareFan I very much doubt it. We already received a release of the first two with updated graphics for Xbox Arcade in 2008 and 2009.
@liveswired I mean it would make sense to hire the people who worked on Banjo-Kazooie in the first place, but there’s a reason I wouldn’t choose them and I would choose the people who did A Hat in Time Instead: These guys actually learned from Rare’s mistakes and from what Mario and other games have done over the years. The result is an amazing game that I’d love to return to if only I got those darned advanced contracts.
@Yosher I can tell you what the reactions will be. 3/4 will be pissed off because it’s not good enough or what they were up to. The rest probably won’t say anything, lol.
I never played BK. I loved Mario platformer, but these are the only ones I took the time to do as I got older as that genre wasn’t important enough to me to make time for other genres I loved (mostly jrpgs which took a lot of my time). Not sure if I would play a new one all the way through, even if it were great. I would definitely try Game Pass to see what it has been about over the years. I cannot play older games with any reverence as I waited far too long to get out of these generations when I lived through them. I was a « graphics whore » in times when eyes were all-eyes. With every game I’ve played, I could only imagine what if the graphics were better. Now that we’re here I can’t go back lol.
@ twztid13 It depends on how you deal with it. You could definitely manage to please all (or most) old fans if they put their hearts into it and not just let the money do the talking.
At times like this, I really wish Nintendo were Banjo-Kazooie and not Microsoft.
@Klobb Why didn’t you want a banjo kazooie game? Don’t you love mascots driving around in carts?
THIS SONIC RENDER IS SO GOOD! I haven’t seen him portrayed like this since the beginning of the true dark age! (2010-present)
@Chlocean Grunty’s Revenge is a short and cute game and Banjo Pilot is one of the best mascot races at GBA.
The original banjo is still the best in my opinion. Twooie is an excellent sequel, but too big and too ambitious. Grunty’s Revenge is short and sweet, very faithful to the original, although isometric and doesn’t lose too much translation. Banjo Pilot is a fun mascot race. As for nuts and bolts, it was played a couple of times but never understood. The vehicle building mechanism, to be honest, didn’t fit the series well.
Honestly, I rarely wish and Nintendo would never break up. I rarely want to make another Donkey Kong game (the ones on Wii and Switch are Desent, but I can’t help but think if they were rarely done they would have been better and have a lot more « extras » and other things to offer do than those created by the company that makes the games now (I forget their name. ) Actually, I would love a 3D DK game. Maybe a sequel to Conkers Bad Fur Day?
With smash, Nintendo has done more for Megaman than Capcom in the last 10 years, more for Banjo than Microsoft, arguably more for Castlevania than Konami, arguably more for Sonic than Sega, more for Pac-Man than Namco and more for cloud until FF7R came out. It’s just amazing how much care they have put into all of the new characters
