Western Bulldog Sam Lloyd announces he will not play AFL in 2021
Although 30-year-old Lloyd still had a year, he made the surprising announcement on Tuesday.
What follows is an injury and surgery season that began when he broke his collarbone during the Bulldogs’ fourth encounter with Sydney in June.
He was nudged by Aliir Aliir while competing for a groundball and injured when he hit the deck (see below). .
Lloyd returned on round nine but only made five more games for the season. Most recently he was seen in the exciting win of the dogs against West Coast in round 16, where he grabbed a goal and had 12 departures.
Lloyd joined the Bulldogs in late 2018 after playing 57 games for Richmond. He was picked by the Tigers with Pick No.. 66 in the NAB AFL Draft 2013.
In his first season at Whitten Oval, he scored the best 38 goals of his career, making him the club’s leading goalkicker.
Richmond fans will remember him forever when he sealed the match for the Tigers after the siren against Sydney (see players below) in 2016.

« I’ve been thinking long and hard about this decision over the past few weeks and months and I’ve come to the realization that it’s time to hang up my boots, » said Lloyd.

« Playing AFL has been an amazing experience and I’m proud of what I’ve achieved on the field. My journey has not been conventional, but I am honored to have played at the highest level. «
