Weltnachrichten – AU – Sydney prepares for another evening of SEVERE thunderstorms while the weather radar goes offline

. .

Sydney is hit by severe thunderstorms on the second straight afternoon, with hail, noxious winds and heavy rain drifting the NSW coast.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning on Tuesday for large parts of eastern NSW, including Grafton, Coffs Harbor, Gosford, Sydney, Wollongong, Nowra and Goulburn.

Meteorologist Melody Sturm said the northern and central areas and slopes as well as western Sydney are most at risk.

« The threats we are currently looking at are noxious gusts of wind, heavy rain, and also the potential for major hail, » she said.

Hail the size of ten cent pieces has already been reported on the central north coast of the state.

Ms. Sturm says that catchment areas that are particularly soaked from weeks of rainy weather must be vigilant.

“After all the rain in recent weeks, there is an increased risk of flooding, especially in the northern districts. ”

The weather radar for the Sydney office in Terrey Hills also went offline this afternoon due to technical issues, but warning services and forecasting are not affected.

Anyone interested in monitoring storms in Sydney is asked to use the Newcastle radar which can be found here instead.

A flood warning is current for the Castlereagh River in Mendooran near Dubbo and the Paroo River near the Queensland border.

BOM has also warned that flooding may occur on the Orara and Bellinger Rivers from late Tuesday.

After Monday’s storm, there was heavy rainfall in the Sydney area and over 10. 000 lightning strikes.
