. . An "incredible" performance by Sydney Sixers captain Daniel Hughes brought his team a miracle win on Boxing Day.

. .

Sydney Sixers skipper Daniel Hughes played one of the captain’s big blows to lead his team to a miracle win against the Melbourne Stars in the US Big Bash League.

Hughes stunned the stars, crushing 96 out of just 51 deliveries as the Sixers pursued a 194 winning goal with a ball and wicket at Metricon Stadium on Boxing Day.

Melbourne would have felt safe if Glenn Maxwell and Nicholas Pooran together hit 125 runs for the fifth wicket with 13 sixes as the Stars made 5-193 in their innings.

West Indian left-handed Pooran, who first hit for the Stars this summer, smashed 65 of just 26 balls to please a small crowd in a largely empty Metricon Stadium.

Maxwell finished the innings on his fifth six and ended with 71 out of 47 balls in a typically destructive representation of the Australian all-rounder.

That partnership looked like a match-winner as the Sixers battled to hold the wickets, but Hughes’ knock, which included six fours and seven sixs, earned them an unlikely win.

The Sixers’ hopes seemed fulfilled when Maxwell caught West Indian Carlos Brathwaite (21 of 12) at the border in the penultimate game.

That meant Sydney had 20 runs to go to the final with only two wickets in hand.

Hughes rose to score an unlikely victory thanks to a devastating late big hit spell.

Hughes made the most of Nathan Coulter-Nile, who was off the field with a calf injury, and left Maxwell in the final.

The Sixers skipper smashed a six, a four and a six before stepping out, but four leg-byes from the penultimate ball to Steve O’Keefe, and then sealed the win for the Sixers.

Daniel Hughes 96 (50) is amazing !! Feeling for Maxi And this match reminds me of the match between CSK and DC where Axar Patel ended with 4 6 in the last over-off Jadeja instead of Bravo Coulter Nile being injured. Maxi took responsibility for rolling the last over.

« I did something like this in an audition so I didn’t really know I had that in me until DC (Dan Christian) and there are a few other people who just gave me confidence in the middle order have go out and play, « said the 31-year-old.

« Now that I know it’s there, it’s just trying to repeat it over and over. «

Stars trainer David Hussey said Coulter-Nile suffered a calf strain and although he raised his hand to end the final, he was advised against it for fear of worsening his injury.

« 20 to win, yes, you’d like to believe that, » said Hussey when asked if the last time Coulter-Nile had been available would have been a different result.

« He’s one of the best T20 players in the world . . . but the way Daniel Hughes hit her like anything could have happened.

« I honestly believed we were going to be pinching the game when Cartwright took his catch and I thought right, yeah, we’ll win this, but it shouldn’t be. « . «

The Sixers will play the Melbourne Renegades at Metricon Stadium on Tuesday, while the Stars will travel to Canberra to play the Sydney Thunder on the same day.
