A shark attack shut down a popular tourist beach where a man was killed by one of the deadly animals two weeks ago.

Surf Life Saving Western Australia said a surfer narrowly escaped the shark spotted 50 meters from shore at Cable Beach in Broome on the state’s northwest coast at around 7 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

The shark is believed to have bitten the man’s board, which had large tooth marks visible, when the surfer made it back to shore.

A friend of the surfer said he was a bit shaken by the near miss, but otherwise remained unharmed.

He seems fine, he’s obviously a little shaken, but he’s a pretty solid guy, « the friend told ABC News.

‘The other guy who was in the water said, « No, it wasn’t me. « . At that point he thought, « Okay, that was a shark, I have to go inside. « ‘

The Shire of Broome Council has closed the beach and encouraged beachgoers to follow developments on the SharkSmart website.

The Ministry of Primary Industry and Regional Development said it was coordinating an emergency response to the attack with local authorities.

The attack comes after a 55-year-old swimmer was killed when he was killed on Jan.. November was attacked by a shark on Cable Beach.

He was bitten on the thigh and hand about 2 km north of the rocks on the beach.

Before his death, Cable Beach had not had a shark attack in over 25 years.
