The White House is considering ending its ban on non-U.S. travelers from certain countries including Brazil, UK. Ireland and 26 European countries, several officials told Reuters.
The ban imposed by the Trump administration on containing the spread of the pandemic does not provide for the lifting of entry bans for most non-US citizens who have recently been to China or Iran, according to officials.
While Trump is yet to make a final decision, the plan has had the support of members of the White House coronavirus task force, public health and other federal agencies.
The lifting of the ban could boost U.S. airlines, which have seen international travel fall by 70% according to the aviation industry, with administrative officials indicating that the move no longer makes sense as most of the countries around the world World no regulations are subject to the entry ban.
The first restrictions were directed against China and became effective on Jan.. December, while Iran followed in February. It was mid-March when the entry ban also included 26 Schengen countries, and in May when Brazil was added to the list.
The restrictions currently prohibit the entry of most non-US citizens who have been in these countries in the past 14 days. However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has granted some exceptions to “national interests” to allow travelers from Europe to refer to “humanitarian travel”. Responding to Public Health and National Security ”while exemptions have been granted for some European business travelers, investors, academics, students and journalists.
