Americans Harris English and Matt Kuchar won an unprecedented third title in a record-breaking manner at the QBE Shootout on Sunday.

Kuchar and English, who also won the 2013 and 2016 crowns, became the most successful partnership in event history by winning a 12th place in the final four-ball session at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida – grouped under par 60.

English and Kuchar made six birdies and an eagle in the last eight holes to land on a tournament record of 37 under 179 for 54 holes in three different formats and with no spectators due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

« As a team, we destroyed it this week, » said English. « You have to putt well in all formats and that’s what we did. Matt did a lot of clutch putts, especially on the first day.

« It felt like pretty basic golf out here. It was great fun to play. « 

They broke their own low score record of 182 in 2013 and won by nine strokes to break their own win margin record. The old mark was seven shots from 2013.

« We have an incredible record, » said Kuchar. « We’ll have a hard time reaching this record. « 

Defending champion Rory Sabbatini from Slovakia and Kevin Tway from the USA, Canada’s Mackenzie Hughes and the American Lanto Griffin as well as the US duo Sean O’Hair and Kevin Tway took second place with 188.

English and Kuchar started the finals five shots ahead after shooting a 61 on Saturday with a modified alternate shot format.

« You did a very good job, » said two-time grand winner Greg Norman of Kuchar and English.

Kuchar and English opened Sunday with back-to-back birdies, adding more par-3s to fifth and par-4s to keep late rivals at bay.

Sabbatini and Tway birded seven of the first 10 holes to reach 24-under, but they were still five away.

English and Kuchar responded with four birdies in a row, starting at par 4 11, and increased the lead to seven after Kuchar, whose son Cameron served as his caddy, on Jan.. Rolled in an 8-foot yardage putt.

English tee off at par 3-16 just inches from the trophy and tapped birdie, then dropped just a meter back on par 5-17 for Eagle and made the putt, bringing the duo to 36 – was lifted under.

« Harris was a horse, » said Kuchar. « He just put on a show, especially the Back Nine today. «
