It is no exaggeration to say that Markieff Morris is possibly the best buyout signing in NBA history. Aside from Boris Diaw joining the San Antonio Spurs in 2012, Morris joining the Lakers was one of the few such moves in recent years that directly helped a team secure a championship.

So the good news is he’s rejecting the Clippers’ interest and is coming back to help the Purples and Golds defend their title, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania:

Free agent Markieff Morris has agreed on a minimum contract to return to the Los Angeles Lakers, the source told @TheAthleticNBA @Stadium.

Markieff is considered a One 1-Year Bird due to a 1-year contract with the Lakers and has an implicit no-trade

Morris’ average of 8 points and 4. 6 rebounds per game in the playoffs may sound pretty pedestrian, but it allowed the Lakers to maintain the same physical, tough identity they had maintained all year and let Anthony Davis play the center, a position he overmatched Opponents of all sizes in the middle destroyed the postseason. Morris is by no means a star, but the versatility he gave the Lakers to hold their own against an opponent was absolutely crucial to their title run. It was the last piece they needed to really make everything click.

Morris also may have sacrificed more than any other Laker to make anything possible. Some players on this roster made smaller deals to get to L.. ONE. but Dwight Howard wasn’t going to open more in the final off-season than he was at the Lakers, and no one else on the Lakers rotation gave up as much money as Morris, who returned $ 4. 5 million in guaranteed cash – his entire remaining salary for last season and denying a team option for that – to receive a buyout from the Detroit Pistons and a chance to fight for a championship.

All of this showed admirable dedication to winning, but it wouldn’t have been surprising if he had tried to make money elsewhere after securing his ring. Instead, he’s sacrificing money again – and a chance to return to his twin brother, Marcus – to help Los Angeles defend the title it won just last month. In a season when, more than ever, the Lakers need depth and the ability to flip between all kinds of weird lineups, they may have an even greater need for Morris than before.
