Weltnachrichten – GB – Foxes wake up the Reds in the title race

. .

Leicester City may have felt form, wealth and omens were on their side as they prepared to face Liverpool at Anfield.

Brendan Rodgers’ side could have led the Premier League with a win, which is evidence of their good start to the season, while Liverpool lacked outstanding performers across the team.

And for the statistically minded, Liverpool stepped into the game after reaching their longest undefeated home league run of 63 games – which was ended by Leicester City in January 1981 after nearly three years.

Instead, the Foxes left Anfield, beaten by the reigning champions who reached 64. undefeated home game added to history to secure their 3-0 win.

Leicester are still in the top four and only two points behind the top two – with Tottenham leading the Liverpool league due to the goal difference. So it’s hardly a time of crisis, just a reality check, similar to the one you received last Christmas when Jürgen Klopp’s team defeated the Foxes and finished in second place 4-0 at the King Power Stadium.

As much as much of Liverpool’s injuries are made, it should be noted in the context that Leicester are also currently without key staff, such as Ricardo Pereira, Caglar Soyuncu, Wilfred Ndidi, Timothy Castagne and Daniel Amartey.

However, this was a very cold shower for her. They have made great strides under Rodgers, but much remains to be done before their fans can dream of a repeat of their glorious, miraculous 2015-16 Premier League title.

Liverpool were simply too strong, too fast, too powerful and too strong from the first to the last whistle. Only the woodwork and the excellent performance of goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel saved them from being overwhelmed.

Leicester did not move the ball at the usual pace while Jamie Vardy, who would have imagined his chances against a Liverpool defense without Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold, remained isolated. It would stretch the point even to suggest that he lived on junk.

By contrast, Liverpool have been relentless despite an absentee list that included Thiago Alcantara, Jordan Henderson and Mohamed Salah who tested positive for Covid-19 while on international service with Egypt.

If this is Liverpool without those influential names, the prospect is scary for those looking to take their title away from them. The manager then had to talk about schedule planning for this shortened season, but his team is still keeping pace at the top.

Spurs, under this serial winner Jose Mourinho, look like they could have their say in the title change, especially after beating Manchester City, while Chelsea may have similar aspirations if they move under the radar.

City and Pep Guardiola also need to be included in the equation, but there is something brittle about their current side, a mistake that undermined their chances last season.

It’s Liverpool in every form that remains the team to beat, as Leicester painfully discovered at Anfield.

If there was one moment that summed up a stellar performance, it was their second goal scored by Diogo Jota who settled in at Anfield as on the way.

The move contained 30 passes and was completed by a fatal £ 45million header from the Portuguese striker who showed movement and technique to get the most out of a great cross from left-back Andrew Robertson.

Klopp pumped his fist down the tunnel at the final whistle and beamed with joy after congratulating his Liverpool players and feeling sorry for defeated opponents. He knew this was a potentially difficult task for his team in somewhat reduced circumstances, but they sailed through it in outstanding style.

Leicester fell from its usual standards and at times lacked the ambition and confidence to seize the chance that Liverpool’s injuries offered them.

As others have found out in the past few years, there’s no shame in leaving Anfield well beaten. It happened to many others, but for Rodgers and his players this was an opportunity that was not taken.
