After three long years devastated by debilitating diseases and global pandemic disruption, Tyler Wright is back at the forefront of the surfing world.
The Australian won a historic Maui Pro in Hawaii’s Banzai pipeline on Monday to secure her first WSL title since 2017.
At the first women’s championship, which took place at the legendary reef break, Wright first eliminated compatriot Sally Fitzgibbons in a dominant semi-final before defeating four-time world champion and local favorite Carissa Moore in the final.
It gives two-time world champion Wright a perfect return to the world tour after her 2018 and 2019 seasons were written off due to an ongoing battle with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
« I don’t take stock of that, » the 26-year-old Wright told AAP that he would return to the circle of winners.
« I’m taking stock of the journey of how challenging the past few years have been. How I show up and why I show up and that’s all that is really important to me right now.
« This is just, quite frankly, I’m training to do this. I’m training to be in the position I ended up in today.
« Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t . . . It’s cool to see all of the hard work of the past two years come together. «
Tour operators have decided to compete the women at Pipeline for the first time after a fatal shark attack on a local surfer near Honolua Bay halted the event there earlier this month.
A 3. 17 ride with 30 seconds remaining increased Wright’s two-wave score to 8. 34 out of 20 after Moore took the lead with a 5. 40 with less than two minutes to walk.
Wright said the opportunity to make history as Pipeline’s first female event winner was exciting, but also emotional, as the circumstances resulted in a change of venue.
« I’m not going to lie, it was an emotional roller coaster ride because we got here, » Wright said.
« It came through tragedy and Maui and everyone was devastated. WSL showed real leadership in treating the situation with compassion and bringing us here today.
« Given the opportunity to finish the Maui Pro at Pipeline, I think I am really happy to be here. It’s been a nerve-wracking couple of weeks and definitely an emotional roller coaster ride, but I’m happy to be here. «
