The federal government expects around 1.5 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine from the USA on Tuesday.
The vaccines are expected to arrive by truck and will be the first to arrive from the south of the border.
The provincial governments decide how a vaccine is used. Dr. However, Howard Njoo, Canada’s assistant chief health officer, says all provinces and territories have agreed to suspend use of the vaccine for anyone under the age of 55 pending further study results.
The provinces are responding to concerns raised by an advisory committee regarding a possible link between the shot and rare blood clots.
Dr. Heather Morrison, P.E.I.’s chief medical officer for health, says the risk of developing a serious problem after immunization is « very, very small ».
She says people who have received the AstraZeneca vaccine should look for symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, leg swelling, persistent abdominal pain, sudden onset of severe or persistent headaches or blurred vision, and bruises on the skin other than the vaccination site and should develop four to 20 Days after the shot.
