After an encounter with Maoists yesterday in the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh, some 400 km from the state capital Raipur, at least 22 security guards were killed while on duty. One member of the security group is still missing.
This morning, Chhattisgarh Police Director General (Naxal Operations) Ashok Juneja said the death toll had risen to eight. yesterday five security guards died in action.
On Saturday separate joint teams of security forces with over 2,000 employees started a major operation from the districts of Bijapur and Sukma in the forests of South Bastar, which are considered to be the stronghold of the Maoists. At around 12 noon, the Maoists set up an ambush that led to a meeting that lasted three hours.
Today Interior Minister Amit Shah spoke with Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and took stock of the situation. He also directed Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) director general Kuldiep Singh to visit Chhattisgarh to assess the situation. « The center and the state will fight together and win too, » said Interior Minister Amit Shah dem Prime Minister according to an official statement. He has pledged all necessary help from the center.

In the last 10 days, the state security forces received information about the whereabouts of Madvi Hidma, the top member of the banned CPI (Maoist) who was involved in major attacks such as the 2013 murders of Jhiram Ghati .
Over 30 people were killed in the 2013 attack by Jhiram Ghati Naxal, including senior leaders of the Chhattisgarh Congress.
The meeting on Saturday takes place days after the death and injury of five police officers took place after Maoists attacked a bus carrying 27 DRG (District Reserve Guard) troops in the Naryanpur district of Chhattisgarh. The bus that drove from Kadenar to Kanhargaon was hit by an IED (improvised explosive device).
On Thursday, three Maoists from Sukma district in Chhattisgarh who had planted explosives against the security forces were arrested.
