World news – 52 deaths and 866 new cases of COVID-19, the government confirms the level 5 restrictions are expected to apply at least until Easter.

In the meantime, the Minister of Health has announced that people over 70 will not be fully vaccinated until mid-May.

The Ministry of Health claims to have been informed of 52 additional deaths related to COVID-19 and 866 new cases.

33 of these deaths occurred in February, 12 in January, 6 in December or earlier and 1 is still under investigation. The average age of the deceased was 83 years and the age range 55 – 96 years.

As of 8 a.m. today, 984 COVID-19 patients will be admitted to the hospital, 172 of them in the intensive care unit. 44 additional hospital stays in the last 24 hours.

The Tánaiste said there is no point in reopening the country only to close it again three weeks later.

The part of the construction sector that is still closed is becoming expected to reopen next month, along with a gradual reopening of schools.

The Minister of Health said that people over 70 will not be fully vaccinated until mid-May.

The government’s original goal was for everyone over 70 were vaccinated by the end of March.

Supply problems as well as the decision to use the difficult-to-store mRNA vaccines have led to delays.
