WASHINGTON – Actor and environmental attorney Mark Ruffalo hailed the introduction of extensive infrastructure legislation put in place by key committees in the House of $ 3.5 billion over the next five years to combat the toxic « forever » known as PFAS Chemicals ”in drinking water and industrial wastewater.
It is just wrong that polluters can throw their PFAS waste on the rest of us. It is good news that the Chair of the Committee on Transport and Infrastructure, Peter DeFazio, and the Chair of the Committee on Energy and Trade, Frank Pallone, along with other members of their committees, have passed legislation to grant grants totaling 3, Spending $ 5 billion on municipal water and wastewater treatment trade with their toxic mess. This is an important first step. However, much more is needed to ensure we have clean water and that polluters, not the public, share the cost of cleanup.
The Water Quality Protection and Job Creation Act of 2021, Introduced by Rep. DeFazio (D-Ore.), Chair of the Subcommittee, Grace F. Napolitano (D-Calif.) and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) are submitting a new program with which local authorities will submit to receive US $ 1 billion in grants to implement standards of care for industrial discharges from PFAS for a period of five years.
The LIFT America introduced by Rep. Pallone (DN.J.) and all 32 Democrats on the committee Act of 2021 provides for a new program to provide $ 2.5 billion in grants to help municipal water systems filter PFAS in drinking water.
The Environment Working Group has at least 2,500 industries Locations where PFAS could be released into the air and water or where PFAS waste could be directed to sewage treatment plants. A peer-reviewed study by EWG scientists estimates that more than 200 million Americans could have PFAS chemicals in their drinking water.
Exposure to very low levels of PFAS chemicals in drinking water is linked to a number of health effects , including cancer, reproductive damage and damage to the immune system.
