Crown will not be permitted to open gaming facilities at Barangaroo on December 14th as planned
Crown Resorts is banned from opening its new casino in Sydney next month, after the NSW gambling regulator said he was « uncomfortable » with the company operating a multi-billion dollar venue at Barangaroo.
The decision by the Independent Liquor and Games Authority of New South Wales (ILGA) comes after the company today admitted in an investigation that money laundering likely occurred through the accounts it created for VIP players.. .
ILGA’s Chairman, Philip Crawford, said the authority was « uncomfortable » with the operations of Crown Corporation until it received findings from an ongoing investigation, before Commissioner Patricia Bergin, SC.
Commissioner Bergin is considering the suitability of Crown to hold the license, and her final report will not be due until February 2021..
Mr. Crawford said ILGA’s biggest concern was about money laundering, which Crown acknowledged was a « potential » event in its business in a presentation made to the investigation late last night..
« We had no notice of that, and I don’t think the Bergen investigation or the assistant counselor knew about it, and it came at eleven o’clock, literally – apparently at 11:00 last night, » he said.
« Because when we’re talking about money laundering . . . We are talking about potential drugs, pedophilia, human trafficking and terrorist financing . . . You can see why we are so anxious. « .
Mr. Crawford said ILGA tried to work with Crown to allow other parts of the project to open up.
“We originally suggested with Crown that we would be happy to talk to them about a limited opening, that is, their hotel, bars and restaurants,” he said..
« At first they didn’t talk about it and wanted to have a graded opening that included the games. We are not comfortable with that.
