Gonzaga took a big step closer to an unbeaten regular season, finishing BYU for the second time this season on Monday evening.
The Bulldogs started their 23-2 start against BYU on January 7th in Spokane not repeated, but they came close with a 15-2 breakout to open the rematch.
In the process, the Zags finished a series of sluggish starts and set the table for an impressive 82-71 win over the Cougars im Marriott Center in Provo.
The top-ranked Zags (19-0, 10-0 West Coast Conference) are limited to six conference games, provided two postponed games against Santa Clara and one against Loyola Marymount.
Second placed BYU (15-5, 6-3), who were 32 points behind and lost 17 points at Spokane, fell 22 points behind with 7:15 points.
« That (start) was how much respect they have for BYU, « said Zags coach Mark Few. “This team has always reacted damn well all year long knowing that the guys are more than capable of taking them out. We were in the Pacific (in a 76:58 win last Thursday). We wanted to get out there and play with a bit of speed and we definitely did. “
Gonzaga’s second striker Drew Timme, who had a quiet night with 12 points in the first game, scored 12 points in the first half on Monday. Working on BYU posts Matt Haarms, Richard Harward and Kolby Lee in paint, adding a 3-pointer for good measure.
Timme finished his third double-double of the season with 20 points and 13 rebounds. He gave Gonzaga a 40-28 lead on the color points.

Jalen Suggs overcame the problems in the first half and scored 24 points, five rebounds and three assists in 26 minutes. Andrew Nembhard, who started instead of Anton Watson, contributed 15 points, three rebounds and two assists.

Timme’s field goal gave Gonzaga a 34:19 6:41 -Head Start. Alex Barcello, who led the Cougars with 20 points, collected BYU in half within 41-31.
The Cougars were within 50-42 but the Zags started with a 22-8 boost to get 7: 15 to go 72-50 in the lead. Nembhard scored three field goals and Suggs extended the lead with a basket, a long 3-pointer and a reverse layup on a feed from Nembhard.
