The ATP Cup 2021 has reached the semi-finals as Germany and Russia will compete on one side of the draw, while Italy and Spain will meet in the other half. One of the most important matchups today is going to be Fabio Fognini playing against Pablo Carreno Busta and the Spaniard is a big favorite. Is he the right game for this tournament showdown?

Carreno Busta is the No. 3 player in the Spanish squad as he stands behind Rafael Nadal and Roberto Bautista-Agut. However, Carreno Busta is far from dragging the team down as he has done well in each of his three competitions so far.

Carreno Busta helped defeat the Australian team in early February when he did his part. He beat John Millman in straight sets and then also contributed to the double victory (also in straight sets). A few days later, he beat Michail Pervolarakis in straight sets when Spain played against Greece. In the doubles showdown, Spain pulled out early but this was due to an injury.

Fognini have teamed up with Matteo Berrettini, and to be fair, it’s the latter who mostly carries the team. Fognini lost his fight against Dennis Novak in straight sets, but then defeated Benoit Paire in the showdown against France. Berrettini and Fognini defeated the Austrians in their lone doubles.

One of the most important statistics for this ATP Cup showdown will be the fact that Carreno Busta plays against Fognini 7-0. They haven’t faced each other much (they haven’t met since 2019), but Carreno Bust clearly has his number.

If there’s a silver lining for Fognini, these two have had some close encounters. The final match was a threesome that required a tiebreaker to determine a winner. At the Australian Open 2019, Fognini prevailed again against Carreno Busta. Previously there was another three-seater in Monaco in 2017. Overall, it’s difficult to see Fognini as a dog at this point as he wasn’t the better player in that tournament and the head-to-head story wasn’t good for him is. Take Carreno Busta as Spain was supposed to take the win in that set in straight sets.

Berrettini was very crisp during this ATP Cup event as he won both matchups in straight sets. The most impressive win was the one against Dominic Thiem when he cleared it 6: 2, 6: 4 in early February. Berrettini had barely broken a sweat. The same applies when he defeated Gael Monfils a day later and overtook him 6: 4, 6: 2.

Bautista Agut has not reached nearly the same level. He has only participated in two competitions so far. His first was a win against Alex de Minaur, but it took him three sets to get that out. He lost the first set before coming back. In his second competition, he lost in straight sets to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

These two have only beaten each other four times in their short history, and Berrettini has won three of the four competitions. Each of his victories were also achieved in straight sets. Look for something similar in this Friday competition.
