Thieves broke into businessman John Singleton’s property on the NSW Central Coast last month and got a painting by Arthur Boyd worth 120. $ 000 stolen.

The police went public for assistance when they broke into Mr.. Singleton’s Mount White estate explored.

A painting entitled Lovers in a Boat, valued at 120. $ 000 was stolen from businessman John Singleton.

In a statement, NSW police said an unknown number of people broke into the property between 2 a.m. and 10 a.m.. On the 7th. October at 30 o’clock the distinctive work of art will be removed from the living room.

The painting, entitled Lovers in a Boat, shows a series of human figures in an ocean scene.

Boyd, who died in 1999, is considered to be one of Australia’s greatest artists and was associated with the « Antipodeans » group of painters, which advocated figurative art.

Some of his works have sold for more than $ 1 million, including one for $ 1. 68 million in 2012 and another for $ 1. 58 million in 2015.

Sydney University criminologist Duncan Chappell, who specializes in art theft, said stealing valuable works of art was a « pretty silly crime » because of the challenge of selling the objects.

« You may have an excellent way of carrying out the theft, but once you get it you have to sell it, and that can be a very difficult task, » said Professor Chappell.

Stolen works of art are logged in extensive databases that dealers can use to check the background of objects and alert authorities, insurers and owners.

Professor Chappell said the chances of stolen works of art showing up were usually quite high, although there were infamous examples of pieces that had never been found.

The painting could be smuggled out of Australia if the burglars thought it could be sold on the international black market.

While Boyd’s work is much better known in Australia than overseas, he lived in London for many years and private collectors in Europe may be interested in the painting.

Mr. Singleton has extensive real estate holdings in the Mount White area, including his valuable Strawberry Hill Stud, Saddles Cafe and a nursery. The area is an hour’s drive north of Sydney.

A police source familiar with the investigation said a small number of minor items were also stolen from the property, but the painting was the primary concern.
