Australia’s new squadron of F-35A stealth fighters is ready for action after a two-year test phase.
According to Secretary of Defense Linda Reynolds, the US-built Lockheed Martin Lightning II fleet was officially evacuated on Monday.
« For the past two years, Defense has rigorously tested the F-35A fleet to evaluate aircraft and systems performance and to explain this important milestone, » she said.
Senator Reynolds said reaching the milestone will not be easy in a year disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.
The milestone comes two years after the first F-35A entered service in Australia in 2018.
The supersonic stealth fighters carry advanced electro-optical and infrared sensors and radars, and can fire a « wide variety » of air-to-air and air-to-air weapons.
Australia has committed to 72 jets, which will be distributed to operational squadrons at RAAF Base Williamtown and RAAF Base Tindal as well as to a training squadron from Williamtown.
Monday’s announcement means that the Australian armed forces now have an F-35A squadron ready to conduct « technologically advanced strike and air combat roles ». .
