World News – AU – Ballarat may go vegetarian as this is where Linda McCartney’s exclusive exhibition is held

. . Restaurants and cafes may offer a vegetarian menu to pay homage to the photographer's passionate animal rights activism.

. .

Ballarat may transform itself temporarily into a vegetarian city when an exclusive exhibition of the work of the late photographer Linda McCartney is shown next year, honoring her commitment to animal rights.

A look back at the work of the experienced photographer will guide the iteration of the Ballarat International Photo Biennale 2021 starting next August.

The month-long exhibition includes a number of prints from McCartney’s trips to Australia with her family in 1975 and 1993 that have never been seen before.

The Ballarat exhibition was curated by her family members, including husband Paul and daughters Stella and Mary.

McCartney, who died in 1998, was the first photographer to feature work on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine – an accomplishment she did in 1968 with a portrait of Eric Clapton.

The director and co-curator of the Biennale, Fiona Sweet, said the exhibition was a « big coup » for the regional city and the event.

She said McCartney’s work is shown in other cities around the world, including Glasgow and Liverpool, but the collection on show is unique in each location.

The Ballarat collection would focus heavily on work early in the photographer’s career that captured cultural icons like Jimi Hendrix and members of the Rolling Stones.

« There is an abundance of photographs of her time in London when she captured truly great musicians, artists and writers, » said Ms. Sweet.

« Not formal portraits, but this close relationship with these important artists, she was able to capture that small moment before a major event.

Ms. Sweet said the food would be vegetarian during the biennial, and she hoped that Ballarat restaurants and cafes would also offer vegetarian menus during the event to celebrate McCartney’s status as a « very early anti-meat activist ».

« As most people will know, this became a very powerful part of their psyche and they even developed a number of vegetarian foods, » she said.

« We want to discuss all things about Linda’s life, not just her work, but the way she has embraced vegetarianism.

« I think she would have been thrilled that we included a larger part of her in this festival.

« Many restaurants have photo exhibitions as part of the Biennale’s open program and we will soon be talking to them about whether they could introduce a vegetarian menu that we can then present to the public. «

Family members, including Paul, were officially invited to attend the event, which will take place from Nov.. August to 24. October will take place.

Ms. Sweet said she was confident the family could make it, but given the coronavirus, it was too early to confirm.

« We just don’t know whether they’re doing it or not at this early stage, » she said.

« The family is of course very interested in Linda because she was a very important photographer. «
