Roberts played Roger Moore’s love interest in A View to a Kill and starred in a number of cult fantasy films as well as the hit television series
Tanya Roberts, the glamorous actress who starred alongside Roger Moore in the 1985 Bond film A View to A Kill and who starred in the final series on the hit television show Charlie’s Angels, has died at the age of 65. Her representative confirmed the news to the Hollywood Reporter, saying she collapsed while walking near her Los Angeles home.
In anticipation of a kill, Roberts was given an important role as geologist Stacey Sutton, Bond’s greatest love interest and key ally in the fight against Christopher Walken’s vicious industrialist Max Zorin. By then, she had already solidified her on-screen appeal by appearing in the 1980-81 season of the detective series Charlie’s Angels, replacing Shelley Hack as one of the three title characters.
A native of Victoria Leigh Blum, she began a modeling career before moving to Hollywood with her husband as screenwriter Barry Roberts. She secured a number of small roles, including James Toback’s 1978 drama Fingers and Waxwork slasher Tourist Trap. After winning the role of Charlie’s Angels, her profile rose and she was cast as the slave Kiri in the cult fantasy horror The Beastmaster (1982) and the title role in the 1984 Tarzan-style adventure Sheena: Queen of the Jungle which, despite its disastrous initial reception, has also become a cult film.
Roberts disliked the Bond Girl label and told the Daily Mail that it classified her as a “stupid, glamorous woman” and that “the reason most Bond girls don’t have careers is because they People are just don’t take them seriously « . But she said she didn’t regret taking on the role: « I didn’t know at the time what I know now, and to be honest, who would really turn down that role? » Nobody would . . . I was very young and did what I thought was the right choice. ”
One look at a kill did not lead to a career change, as Roberts had rightly indicated: She starred in « erotic thrillers » such as Night Eyes, Inner Sanctum and Sins of Desire as well as in television series such as Hot Line (also with a » erotic « inclination).
However, in 1998 she starred in a long-running role on the retro sitcom That ’70s Show as Midge Pinciotti, which appeared in more than 80 episodes. Her husband’s terminal illness and subsequent death in 2006 led her to retire from acting.
