Billy Brownless and Garry Lyon spent Christmas Day together five years after his former best buddy ran away with his wife Nicky.

Billy Brownless talked about where things are with Garry Lyon on Sam Newman’s « You Can’t Be Serious » podcast after he ran away with his wife and moved in with his kids.

Five years after Billy Brownless’ world was turned upside down, the former Geelong superstar appears to have buried the hatchet with his former best buddy Garry Lyon.

Brownless and his ex-AFL colleague Garry Lyon were thieving for years, but a decade-long friendship collapsed when Lyon ran away with Brownless’ wife Nicky and later moved in with his children.

But on Christmas Day, Nicky and the two were enjoying the Christmas celebrations when the Brownless family gathered in the small rural Victorian town of Wensleydale.

Brownless’ eldest daughter Lucy uploaded several photos from the day that she spent with the whole family. Multiple commentators loved seeing Billy and Gaz together again.

The fallout was public and brutal when the dirty business splashed onto the front pages of newspapers in Melbourne and Geelong, where Brownless played 198 games for the Cats.

But Brownless said in an appearance on Sam Newman’s « You Cannot Be Serious » podcast earlier this year that everyone involved would make the best of the circumstances.

« You know I’m going to ask you this – people want to know how you and Garry Lyon are doing, » Newman asked.

« At the time, of course, you’re going through all of the different emotions, » Brownless said. « Why me? » And of course a little hatred.

« But now mate, it’s been four or five years, I stopped by and everyone is in a good place to be honest. Garry and Nicky are – that’s fine – and the kids (too).

« That was the other big problem (at the time). The young Maxy was about 10 years old, Oscar was about 14 years old, the girls (Lucy and Ruby) were 16, 17 years old.

« It was so public that it was the biggest problem. It was so public. On TV, in the newspapers, front page of Geelong Addy.

« It was hard back then because it was so public. I would go to a coffee shop and I would swear everyone was looking at me and talking about it and it wasn’t them. ”

Brownless admitted that his relationship with Lyon was no longer the same as it used to be and while the couple wouldn’t say they wouldn’t exchange Christmas cards, they are now sharing at least one meal.

« There are no problems, we’re in a good room, he’s in a good room, Nicky is, the kids are and me too. But that took time. It has. ”

Brownless said he was told early on that it would take two years to get over the betrayal, but « two weren’t right ». .

« People have to take sides, your friends, your in-laws, your really close friends, » he said. “Which side are you and your children going with?. It’s interesting times. ”

Brownless and Nicky were married for more than 18 years, but were reportedly estranged as Lyon’s relationship with her developed.

« She just fell in love with what happened, » said Brownless when he appeared on « I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here ».

« I wasn’t expecting it. You think she will come back and all, but she didn’t. So that was a real kick in the stomach. ”
